This week, in my Wednesday post, I talked about how difficult it is to employee friends, especially when it comes to bonuses; this week’s topic, then, is: favoritism or meritocracy?
I would like to specify that I’m not asking you if you prefer one of the two in general, but instead I’m asking you to chose among the two in specific situations: when it’s about you or if it was about a friend (in the case you were the boss who decides for the bonus).
It is easy to favor meritocracy, but when it’s about us or a friend, things and thought could change: what if you were the boss friend and knew that you will get the bonus instead of your collegue (who honestly deserves it more than you)? Or, what if you didn’t get the bonus (but you deserved it more than your collegue) just because you’re the boss friend and he wants to avoid the public appearance of bias? And, what if you were the boss and you had to decide…
In these cases the choice is not easy: meritocracy is worth in case of friends working together? Would you prefer hurting a friend for the sake of meritocracy or favor him/her to the detriment of a fair reward?
In all these cases, whose side are you on?
